Much of the area in North Bethesda was a tobacco plantation in the 19th century, owned by a slave-owning family surnamed Riley. It began to be a better place when it was privileged with stops along a railway line by the late 19th century and also had its own tram line connecting Georgetown and Rockville (along current-day Fleming Avenue). Many wealthy families lived in the area, including Captain James Frederick Oyster and Charles Corby. Due to this development and as automobiles became more available, it eventually transformed into a commuter suburb of Washington D.C.
Among its 14 districts, the downtown and urbanized neighborhood of White Flint is the commercial and residential center of North Bethesda. Transportation in Bethesda is easy for commuters as it is served by the Red Line. From White Flint Metro Station, anyone can go to either Twinbrook Metro Station or Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station.
