Edward Offutt first established this Potomac hamlet in 1714 after receiving a 600-acre grant from Lord Baltimore. It was known for its Indian trade route constructed by the Canaze Indian nation. It became well-known in the 18th century and is served by travelers and planters. It was then named again as Potomac in 1881 by John McDonald. Potomac was developing fast in the 1950s and became a suburban community.


Rockville and Bethesda are some of the nearest cities in Potomac. Some of the schools in the area are Potomac Elementary, Wayside Elementary, Bells Mill Elementary, Cabin John Middle School, Winston Churchill High School, and The Ridge School of Montgomery County.
